Blind Dog Has Seeing Eye Dog

Posted on Friday, July 29, 2011

Duke (right) guides his mother, Daisy, who is completely blind.

A Special Bond

This is the story of Duke and Daisy, two very special dogs. Daisy, 10, is completely blind and Duke her 6-year old offspring has become her seeing eye dog. The pair are inseparable and never get too far apart from each other but if they do Daisy barks and Duke comes running to her side. Duke watches out for her and guides her everywhere around their foster home.

When Daisy and Duke’s family lost their home due to a foreclosure, the pair found themselves at a shelter in Nebraska. They spent so many months there that the fur on their elbows was worn down and their skin was raw. With difficulty finding the two a suitable home, they came within 24 hours of being euthanized. That’s when a rescue group in Iowa stepped in, saved them and Secondhand Hounds rescue brought them to Minnesota. A woman named Leslie then signed on as their foster. “We can’t let these dogs be euthanized,” dog trainer Leda Blom recalls Leslie saying.

Duke Takes The Lead

Blom, who trained Leslie’s own dogs, was hired to train Daisy and Duke a few times a week. Blom taught Daisy the word “careful” so she is aware when she is about to bump into something. Daisy relies on her senses of hearing and smell to get around, but unfailingly, Duke acts as her guide. He showed her how to go in and out of the doggy door from the fenced yard. “He only went through about five times, showing her how to do it, and then Daisy poked her head through and went in,” Blom says, smiling. Leslie has offered to pay for one month of training when the Labs find their permanent home, she even spoke with an eye specialist to see if Daisy qualifies for eye surgery. “How many people would do that for a 10-year-old dog?” Blom asks.

A Loving Home

Blom has trained dogs nearly her entire life. “I was raised doing this,” she says. As Daisy and Duke happily lick her face, it’s clear they are in good hands. And Secondhand Hounds is determined to find them a loving, forever home.

Blom insists that the two absolutely have to stay together. “They have to go to a family that will take them both,” she says. On their adoption file it reads, “They have the strongest bond we have ever seen from two dogs. They need a very special home.” Their new family needs to have a fenced yard and very few steps for Daisy, they are just like any other dogs but even better. “They have forgiven people for what they went through. Duke likes you to throw the ball a few times, and then they’re both perfectly content to cuddle with you,” Blom says. Daisy and Duke also get along with children, cats and other dogs.

A happy update! Daisy and Duke were adopted this week to a loving Twin Cities family, according to Emily Hawk, adoption coordinator for Secondhand Hounds. “They will remain together and have a big, fenced yard to play in,” Hawk said.
